Sovyet Sosyalist Cumhuriyetler Birliği'nin bir parçası olarak yetmiş yıllık dinin toplum üzerindeki kısıtlama hizmetlerinin sona ermesinin ardından 1990'ların başında bağımsızlığa kavuşan Orta Asya devletlerinde genel dini canlanma hareketi başlamıştı. Aradan geçen çeyrek asrın bu cumhuriyetlerde din sorununun sağlıklı temele oturtulduğu söylenemez. Bu cumhuriyetlerin birçoğunda yerli yöneticilerin eski zihniyetiyle dine yaklaşmaları, toplumdaki yerine dair çözümün karşısında en büyük engel görünüyor. Helene Thibault, Asya'da İslam sorununu Tacikistan örneği üzerinden inceliyor ve Sovyetler Rejiminin kültürünün Tacikistan'da siyaset süreçlerini, insanların dininin toplumsal yerini güvence altına alma kimliklerinin ifade edilme şekillerini ekilemeye nasıl devam ettiriyor dikkat çekici çalışmayla ortaya koyuyor.
